The Top Stories of 2005
Written by Antonio Vazquez, Reporter

—PARAGON CITY, December 31, 2005

As the heroes and citizens of Paragon City settle into 2006, it is once again time to look back at some of the major news stories of the past year.

The Coming of the Kheldians

The year began with strange new aliens descending upon Paragon City. They identified themselves as Kheldians, and they have the ability to merge with humans to form very powerful hybrid entities. Many of these merges are peaceful symbiotic relationships. There are a few reported cases where the merges were forced.

Sunstorm, the representative of the Peacebringer Kheldian faction, told the Free Press shortly after the Kheldian’s arrival, “We are very sorry that our war with the [rival Kheldian faction] Nictus has made the Earth into one of our battlefields. But unlike the Nictus, we are committed to establishing a peaceful and mutually beneficial relationship with humans, and we will do everything possible to ensure that your way of life remains intact.”

Some citizens of Paragon City are not convinced. In April, the Our Earth Society issued a controversial press release stating, “Earth is for humans, and that is the way it should stay. While the Society is not opposed to having diplomatic relations with extraterrestrial intelligences, we believe that our planet—our home—should remain a safe haven from dangerous external influences such as the Rikti and the Kheldians.”

This press release sparked numerous vocal protests on both sides of the issue and became a hot political debate. Congressman Patrick Kennedy said in a visit to Paragon City, “I understand the concerns facing the citizens of Paragon City today. I lost a good friend during the Rikti War and know firsthand how dangerous beings from other worlds can be. However, I think that it would be a big mistake to assume that all such beings are hostile based on our experience with only one group of such beings. The fact is that we are also citizens of the universe, and if we are to continue thriving as a people in the universe, we will have to seek out peaceful allies to help us against those who would do us harm.”

What exactly do the Kheldian visitors mean to the long term future of Paragon City and to Earth? After only one year, it is impossible to say, but one thing is certain: Things will never be the same.

Gamester's Pranks Takes Toll on City

—ATLAS PARK, December 23, 2005

“It’s just insane,” said Dr. Warren Gifford of the Chiron Medical Center. “We’ve had more frostbite cases over the past week than we’ve had during the past fifty winters. People have to learn to leave these boxes alone!”

Dr. Gifford is not alone in his concern. Beginning on Monday, mysterious gift-wrapped boxes began appearing throughout all zones of Paragon City after an equally mysterious broadcast by someone calling himself the Gamester taunted citizens and heroes using an unauthorized radio broadcast to “Come find out what fate has in store for you.”

Blue Steel of the Paragon City Police Department immediately issued a statement urging citizens, “Please do not touch these boxes. Many have proved very dangerous, even to longtime heroes working in Paragon City.” Ms. Liberty later confirmed Blue Steel’s statement by verifying that several heroes were indeed in the city's hospitals because of icy attacks by strange animated snowmen that spring forth from some of the boxes.

—GALAXY CITY, December 17, 2005

The members of the Freedom Corps have always been regarded as heroes for fighting crime in Paragon City.  Now, they are heroes in quite a different way, a way that many in Paragon City will find just as special.

Last Tuesday, Freedom Corps issued a press release detailing a secret holiday plan referred to as Operation Holiday Cheer.  The plan started early this year with heroes contributing toys and money to a special division of the new Longbow organization designed to raise morale in Paragon City and reinvigorate its citizens with a sense of pride.

—INDEPENDENCE PORT, September 16, 2005

Paragon City Police were astounded to discover a large stash of stolen goods in Independence Port late last evening. Military equipment, weapons, and pharmaceuticals worth tens of millions of dollars were taken from a warehouse in Liberty Quay that is allegedly run by an organized crime family. Several arrests were made at the warehouse and further investigation is being conducted to determine the involvement of organized crime.

The arrests come while the Paragon City Police Department is facing sharp criticism from citizen and hero groups for allowing crime to run rampant throughout the city. “We hope that this puts to rest some of the criticism about Paragon City’s police effectiveness,” said Tara Devonshire, Public Relations Director and spokesperson for the Paragon City Police Department. “While we may not be a one-on-one match for some criminal groups, we are better equipped to fight crime on logistic and strategic levels. The weapons recovered last night are off the streets because of the police.”
